Be an ADVOCATE for your HEALTH!

Being an advocate for your own health is so important these days. I had a back injury about 4 years ago, that has flared up on and off over the course of time. I have gone to several doctors that do not really have an explanation for me (it is arthritis, your SI joint, etc.). Well, as it turns out, thanks to going to an amazing doctor at PSU Orthopedics- after about 8 x-rays (not 1 or 2), I have a bulging/possibly herniated disc (which would explain the sharp pain going down my left leg into my foot). I am now on Prednizone and muscle relaxers. I will also be going to a great PT who is certified in the McKenzie Method for treatment of back pain (thanks to my doctor and a couple of great friends for this great recommendation). I was able to pop in to get the "Mckenzie Superroll" and the Treat Your Own Back Book so I could get started right away.

I am NOT going to let this back injury get in the way of my healthy lifestyle.

I will still be eating healthy 80% of the time and I will still exercise every day- just with some modifications (including the addition of the back stretches). Luckily I will have support from my Lab, Buddy every step of the way smile emoticon

Getting old is a real pain...literally!

***Roadblock with my fitness journey- I have been exercising consistently for the past 3 months, and loving every minute of it. For the 1st 2 months I stayed faithful to the 21 Day Fix workouts, and Zumba (the Zumba 1-2 times per week). As a Beachbody Coach, I thought that it would be fun to try a new workout program so I order PIYO because I adore Chalene Johnson, and love Pilates and Yoga. I have always been flexible, and with some bladder issues, thought it would be perfect because it is a lower impact workout.

Flashback- 2 years ago, I did have some lower back issues, and after visiting the physical therapist, chiropractor, and orthopedic doctor, I was diagnosed with Lumbar Osteoarthritis- which is basically when your cartilage gets worn down as you get older. Here is a video that explains it a little better:Lumbar Osteoarthritis Video

So the doc put me on anti inflammatory meds, which helped a little bit, and I stopped all exercise for about a month. Over time, I did start to feel better, and also had some success with taking the over the counter supplement, Osteo Bi flex (containing Glucosamine and Chondroitin).

Ok, so fast forward....I have not had any back pain since then...UNTIL I did 2 workouts of PIYO- soooo bummed. My back did not hurt while I was doing the PIYO, but after 2 days of it, I was in a lot of pain in my lower back.

When thinking back to 2 years back, I realized that what had triggered my back pain last time was also a Yoga class (more flow Yoga than gentle Yoga).

So now I am back on anti inflammatory meds, no exercise for at least a couple of weeks, and the realization that I can't do Yoga flow moves :(   It was kind of strange the way the doctor explained it- he said that flexible people are able to push their body with certain moves/stretches, and it does not hurt as you are doing it- people who are not flexible have bodies that are able to say, "Stop, that is hurting". Basically people who are flexible tend to push our bodies too far....and as we get older, it does finally catch up to you- boo!

Any way, it is a really disappointing day, because not only can I not do Yoga any more, I am off limits to any workouts for a little while.

I just bought a Wegman's brand containing the natural supplements of Glucosamine (1500) and Chondroitin (1200). The Glucosamine is supposed to help with cartilage formation and the Chondroitin helps give cartilage its elastic properties, and can have an anti inflammatory effect, which can help with the swelling of the joints. I am anxious to see how this works in comparison to the Osteo bi flex- this brand contained more of Chondroitin than the Osteo.

Please comment below if you have dealt with back issues like this and have had any luck with natural supplements. Thanks so much!

My Journey to a Healthier, Happier Lifestyle

My husband Jim and I signed up to participate in a 21 Day Fix online challenge group on January 5th, and we have not looked back since. We are eating healthy and working out everyday. The key is to have that support and accountability from an online Beachbody Coach. We were required to check in daily, and this truly made all the difference in the world. I am currently down 14 pounds and 8 total inches- 2 in the waist. I love my experience so much that I decided to become a Beachbody coach. I would love to help you on your journey to a healthier lifestyle. NUTRITION + FITNESS + SUPPORT + ACCOUNTABILITY = SUCCESS

All About Me

I love being a wife, mother, and kindergarten teacher....but it takes a lot of multitasking, and can be very stressful. In recent months, I have just felt so overwhelmed, so out of balance with my life. I just felt tired all the time.

Of course when I sat still and reflected I knew what was missing right away... a healthy lifestyle. I have never eaten healthy or exercised consistently. Admittedly, I never really had to worry about my weight until after my 2nd child was born at age 34. Suddenly I realized that I can't eat junk food and not gain a ton of weight. So,  I would say that I have been on the weight loss/diet rollercoaster for the past 12 years (gain 10, lose 5, gain 15, etc.).

Over the past couple of years I am happy to say that I actually did adopt 1 healthy habit- beginning the day with a nutritional shake. Now, I have tried many brands, but I have to say that I am absolutely in LOVE with Shakeology. I have more energy, my sugar cravings are down, and has improved my digestion.

Drinking Shakeology led me to...Beachbody. I began to browse around and learned about the Beachbody Challenge: drink Shakeology every day (which I was already doing), select a workout program, sign up with a Beachbody Coach, and join a challenge group. So that is exactly what I did. It turns out that my son Erik's Business Teacher was also Beachbody Coach. Her name is Sarah Griffith and I am forever grateful to her. After a long conversation, she suggested trying the 21 Day Fix as my workout and nutrition program.

I felt so passionate about changing my lifestyle and make eating healthy and exercising  a HABIT that I immediately signed up to be a Beachbody Coach. I can't wait to be a product of the product. I am so excited to be going on this lifelong journey to a healthy lifestyle.
